After the war Alf returned to civilian life in London. He resumed his career as a locksmith and got married to Elsie, who had served in the Royal Air Force during the war. Alf and Elsie bought a small house in Rainham, Essex where they raised a son, Ashley.

Alf and Elsie were together until Elsie was stricken with Alzheimers disease, Alf cared for her as long as he could but eventually she had to go into full time nursing care. Elsie died on 26th October 2000.

Alf has followed his interest in military history over the years and is a regular visitor to the the old battlefields in Belgium and France. Alf usually goes to the old World War I town of Ypres in Belgium for a few days about 3 times a year with his mates where there is much consuming of beer and the telling of old war stories.
